Devils welcome Penguins to Prudential Center
Hockey Betting Lines
12/10/2008 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to get back on track
when they visit the surging New Jersey Devils for a clash between Atlantic
Division rivals tonight at Prudential Center.
The Penguins, who are second in the Atlantic with 34 points, have lost three
of four contests to begin the month of December.
Pittsburgh has lost back-to-back games and dropped both of those tests in
regulation. The most recent setback came Monday evening in a close battle
with the visiting Buffalo Sabres.
Thomas Vanek's league-leading 20th goal of the season was the go-ahead score
in the third period, as the Sabres came back to edge the Penguins, 4-3, at
Mellon Arena.
The Pens had held a 3-1 advantage in the game, but Buffalo would score the
game's final three goals. Vanek's tally capped the Sabres surge at 6:13 of
the final period.
Ruslan Fedotenko had two goals for the Penguins and Kris Letang added the
other score. Dany Sabourin turned aside 25 shots in the loss.
Sidney Crosby had an assist in the loss and has recorded a point in seven
straight games. He has six goals and 10 assists during the run and is second
in the NHL, as well as on his team, with 41 points this year. Pittsburgh's
Evgeni Malkin leads the league with 45 points.
The Penguins are 8-4-2 as the visiting team this season and tonight are
beginning a stretch of three road tests in four outings.
The Devils, however, have won seven of eight games and last played on
Saturday when they edged the Canadiens in overtime. That tilt in Montreal
allowed New Jersey to end a five-game road trip with a 4-1-0 mark.
Zach Parise netted the game-winner 31 seconds into overtime to lift the
Devils to the 2-1 decision in Montreal.
Alex Kovalev was called for tripping with 28 seconds left in the third, and
the Devils set up the power play early in overtime. A shot from the high
slot from Paul Martin was deflected out to Patrik Elias to the left of the
net. Elias chose to fire a pass across the goal mouth instead of taking a
high-percentage shot and Parise was able to score into a wide open net.
Scott Clemmensen stopped all but one of 26 shots to earn the win for New
Jersey, which is fourth in the Atlantic Division, but just four points in
back of Pittsburgh.
New Jersey is 7-4-1 as the host this year and is beginning a three-game
homestand tonight. The Devils have won three straight in Newark.
The Penguins beat the Devils, 4-1, in Pittsburgh last Saturday, and have won
three of four and four of the last six meetings in this series. New Jersey has
also lost five of six at home against the Penguins.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.
The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.
The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.
Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:
Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)
Arizona Cardinals +6.5 (-110), Under 46.5 (-110), +220 (Money line)
Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays yesterday and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action. Each individual play costs $15.00, however, MySportsbook.com recommends purchasing Matt's NFL Playoff Package which includes all of Matt's Super Bowl props and picks from just $45.00.

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
As of Wednesday, MySportsbook.com closed its book with Mayweather a favorite to defeat De La Hoya at -170 (a $100 bet wins $70), while De La Hoya is a +140 underdog (a $100 bet wins $140).
Mayweather arrived at about 11:30 a.m. on a big truck with his face and a big "World's Best Pound-for-Pound" sign scribbled across the vehicle. He was accompanied by his entourage made up of rappers and his training team.
A crowd of close to 3,000 eager fans packed the MGM Grand lobby, with their cameras in tow, all trying to vie for position to get a good angle at Mayweather, who is acknowledged as the world's best fighter pound-for-pound.
Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president, described the fan turnout as "amazing" and swore he had never seen anything quite like this event.
"The crowd was fantastic. Everybody was just too eager to see the two fighters," said ALA manager Michael Aldeguer, who was among those who waited at the lobby together with his ward Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ Banal.
De La Hoya made his own grand entrance at the hotel lobby at around 12:30 p.m. accompanied by GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and trainer Freddie Roach.
The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.
The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.
De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.
Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.
But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.
