Mason aims for fourth straight shutout as Jackets visit Avs
Hockey Betting Lines
01/02/2009 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rookie goaltender Steve Mason is in the midst of a record-
breaking shutout streak for Columbus. He might have to extend that run if the
Blue Jackets are to pick up a rare victory in Colorado.
Looking for just their third-ever victory in Denver, Mason and the Blue
Jackets take on the Avalanche tonight at the Pepsi Center.
Columbus has never had a Calder Memorial Trophy winner, awarded annually to
the league's top rookie, in its previous seven seasons as an NHL franchise,
but Mason is doing his best so far to change that. The 20-year-old has helped
the Blue Jackets to a three-game winning streak by stopping all 71 shots he
has faced in that span.
After making 27 saves in Wednesday's 2-0 win over Anaheim, Mason became the
first Blue Jackets netminder to ever post a shutout in three straight games.
He also is currently riding a club-record shutout streak of 182 minutes and
eight seconds.
A third-round pick in 2006, Mason now has five career shutouts in just 20
starts and his latest performance moved him into a tie with injured Vancouver
goalie Roberto Luongo for the league lead. He also leads the NHL in both goals
against average (1.69) and save percentage (.938) despite not making his NHL
debut until November 5.
Craig MacDonald and Michael Peca scored versus the Ducks for the Blue Jackets,
who have won a season-high tying three straight games after getting shut out
themselves in their previous two games.
Columbus' last two wins have come on the road, halting a seven-game road
losing streak and improving the team to 6-10-3 as the visiting team this year.
Tonight is the third contest of a six-game road trip for the Blue Jackets.
Mason has never faced the Avalanche and it was Fredrik Norrena in net when the
Blue Jackets posted a 4-2 win in Colorado on October 30. However, that victory
was just Columbus' second in 15 all-time road (2-12-1) meetings with the Avs.
Though the Jackets have won three of their last four overall meetings with
Colorado, the Avalanche have still won 10 of the previous 14 clashes.
After winning three straight at home, Colorado hit the road on Wednesday and
was defeated by Phoenix, 3-1. Peter Mueller scored twice and Mikael Tellqvist
made 28 saves for the Coyotes.
T.J. Hensick lit the lamp for Colorado, which had outscored its opponents 14-8
over its winning run. Peter Budaj allowed three goals on 29 shots in defeat.
He is 4-2-0 with a 1.91 GAA and one shutout in seven all-time games versus
Columbus.
Milan Hejduk appeared in his 738th career game, passing Hall of Famer Peter
Stastny for fourth place on the franchise's all-time games played list. Only
Joe Sakic (1,378), Adam Foote (839) and Michel Goulet (813) have played in
more games for the Colorado/Quebec franchise than Hejduk.
Colorado will play two straight at home and is 11-6-0 at the Pepsi Center this
year.
